Islamic State terrorist group lost emirate but it is not eliminated

The Secretary-General of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs, Jabar Yawar said on Friday (November 26) the announcement of the defeat of the Islamic State (ISIS) by the federal government was mistaken.

Yawar told al-Araby al-Jadeed that one of the main reasons for the revival of ISIS attacks is the security vacuum that exists between the areas under the control of federal Iraqi forces and Peshmerga forces.

Compared to 230 operations in 2020, ISIS carried out 170 terrorist operations during the first ten months of 2021 in which 837 civilians and members of Iraqi Security Forces were killed, wounded or abducted, according to Yawar.

“The organization lost its emirate, but it was not eliminated as a terrorist organization,” he said.

Yawar said ISIS has changed its method and approaches, from direct confrontation to planting mines and explosives, and kidnapping civilians for ransom.
