Islamic State terrorist group claimed responsibility for the deadly Sinai attack on military personnel

The terrorist group claimed responsibility in a statement on Sunday via its Amaq News Agency, which was also released on Telegram, according to AFP.

The so-called ‘Wilayat Sina’ (‘Sinai Province’) — an affiliate of Islamic State in North Sinai — repeatedly claimed responsibility for several terrorist attacks in North Sinai in recent years.

Thousands of people attended on Sunday the funerals for the deceased soldiers.

President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi chaired a meeting on Sunday with the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), urging the army to continue purging North Sinai and the peninsula of terrorists and militant groups.

El-Sisi — the supreme commander of the Armed Forces — directed the military to continue security operations in order to eliminate all forms of terrorism.

The Armed Forces announced in a Saturday statement that it foiled an attack on a water lifting station, noting that the terrorists who carried out the attack are currently being hunted down and besieged in an isolated area in Sinai.

Numerous world leaders and international and Arab organisations have condoled Egypt over the deaths of its soldiers and expressed their solidarity with Cairo in its war against terrorism.

Terrorist attacks in North Sinai have declined in recent years following massive and successive security and military operations.

These attacks targeted security forces, particularly at military and police checkpoints, as well as civilians, causing hundreds of casualties.

Meanwhile, hundreds of terrorists were killed in anti-terror military operations, according to periodical Armed Forces reports.

In 2018, the Armed Forces launched a major counter-terrorist drive titled ‘Comprehensive Operation Sinai 2018’ that has succeeded in almost eradicating terrorism from North Sinai as well as the Nile Delta and desert areas.
