Islamic State terror attack foiled on Turkish Republic Day as three suspects are arrested
Turkish anti-terror police on Tuesday foiled a suspected attempt to carry out a “sensational attack” by ISIS during celebrations for Republic Day in Istanbul. According to security forces, quoted by local broadcasters, three suspects were arrested.
The suspects last week reportedly stole a car in the district of Samìncaktepe, on the outskirts of the city, replacing the original license plate with a fake one and parking it near the prefecture, which was perhaps one of the targets of the intended attack, according to the reports.
The suspects were arrested during a simultaneous operation at five different locations of the city. Police also seized a shotgun, munitions and paper and digital documents linked to ISIS during the operation.
One of those arrested had already been detained for his connections with a jihadist group while another suspect’s brother was killed in a war zone in Syria.
