Islamic State supporters sentenced in Moscow for bombing high-speed train

The Moscow District Military court sentenced seven Tajikistan natives to prison time after convicting them of an attempted terrorist attack. The defendants, who allegedly support the Islamic State, were convicted of attempting to bomb the popular Sapsan high-speed train line running from Moscow to St. Petersburg.

Investigators asserted that, in the summer of 2017, the defendants placed an explosive device on the line’s train tracks to protest the Russian military presence in Syria. The resulting explosion did not derail the train; instead, it damaged five wagons, causing 55 million rubles (now $870,370) in damage. The alleged attackers were given sentences of 15 to 21 years in high-security prison colonies.
