Islamic State suicide bomber flew out of RGIA in 2016
Kalukettiya Purayil Ijas, the suicide bomber in August 2 Jalalabad jail attack in Afghanistan, fled the country with his family to Khorasan in June 2016 from Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Shamshabad, sources said.
Ijas hailing from Kasargod in Kerala fled to Khorasan via Muscat. Sources said Ijas reportedly led the attack at the prison and was also the one who blew himself up along with a truck at the entrance of the prison. Twenty-nine people died in the attack. Ijas’s wife Rafaela and child were in the custody of Afghan authorities, sources said.
The National Investigation Agency, which busted several terror modules in Kerala after blasts in Sri Lanka in 2019, was reportedly trying to trace Islamic State’s Kasargod module and the involvement of Indians in the prison attack apart from the recruitment process carried out to execute the plan.
Sources added that three out of a dozen IS terrorists involved in the attack were from India.
