Islamic State imposes taxes on people in the eastern Deir Ezzor countryside

Today, unknown assailants, believed to belong to Daesh, imposed taxes on civilians in Al-Hawayej village east of Deir Ezzor, according to Deir Ezzor 24 network correspondent.

Our correspondent added that masked gunmen raided houses in Al-Hawayej village at dawn, and asked the mayor of al-Rugheib village, “Jamil al-Ismail al-Khalaf Abu Abd,” to pay a sum of $25,000 on the pretext that he is loyal to Assad regime, as he “constantly talks about the heroism of Assad forces”. The same persons imposed on “Faisal Al-Suwaij” that he has to pay a sum of $30,000 “negotiable to be reduced.” Al-Suwaij is from Al-Hawayej town. About more than 8 months ago, he moved to live in Hasakah province, but he still comes to Al-Hawayej from time to time.

According to relatives of the attacked, the gunmen said they were imposing these taxes to help the women prisoners in the camps controlled by the SDF.

The gunmen have threatened the people with death if they did not pay the required amounts.

It is worth mentioning that two days ago, the Syrian democratic forces launched an intensive security campaign in Al-Hawayej village in search of remnants and cells of Daesh, but the group’s activities continue despite of these campaign.
