Islamic State hideout discovered in Kirkuk

Iraqi forces on Saturday raided a location used by Islamic State (IS) sleeper cells in Kirkuk, an official statement said.

Federal police forces and Iraqi aircrafts were engaged in the operation, during which dried food, military outfits, telecommunication devices were seized, the Iraqi police said.

The statement also revealed that multiple materials which could be used to develop bombs, were confiscated from the location.

The Kurdish province of Kirkuk is under the control of the Iraqi central government since October 2017. However, it is struggling with unstable security situation challenged by the IS sleeper cells in the area.

The Iraqi government declared final victory over IS in December 2017 despite the persisting terrorist attacks and a continued wave of violence at the hand of the remaining IS militants.
