Islamic State sniper guns down Iraqi soldier in Diyala province

An Islamic State sniper has shot dead an Iraqi soldier in the province of Diyala, a security source said as the country still seeks to recover from destruction caused by the militant group.

“An army soldier was killed after an Islamic State sniper opened fire at him while on duty on the outskirts of Qarah Tapah district in Baqubah,” the source told Al-IKH News on Tuesday.

A manhunt was launched for the sniper, who fled the scene after the shooting incident, the source added.

Iraq declared the collapse of Islamic State’s territorial influence in November 2017 with the recapture of Rawa, a city on Anbar’s western borders with Syria, which was the group’s last bastion in Iraq.
