ISIS uses Pakistan for attacks in Afghanistan: Afghan Defense Ministry

Rising insecurities in Pakistan have led to new verbal tensions between Kabul and Islamabad. The Pakistani army states that the TTP still uses Afghan soil for its attacks in Pakistan, while the Taliban officials deny this accusation, claiming that ISIS entered Afghanistan from Pakistan.

General Ahmad Sharif, spokesperson for the Pakistani army, accused the Taliban government during an “important” press conference on Tuesday, May 7th, of not fulfilling its commitments in the fight against terrorism. He added that the March attack in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region, which resulted in the death of five Chinese engineers, was planned in Afghanistan.

Inayatullah Khwarazmi, spokesperson for the Ministry of Defense of the Taliban, responded to the Pakistani side’s statements early this morning, May 8th, and added that “pointing the finger at Afghanistan” is Pakistan’s “unsuccessful” attempt to escape its responsibilities.

Mr. Khwarazmi, in reaction to the March attack that targeted Chinese engineers and which the Pakistani side believes was planned in Afghanistan, also stated that “Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is located in an area that is under intense security coverage by the Pakistani army” and concluded that targeting Chinese nationals indicates the “weakness of Pakistani security agencies.”

The Pakistani army has stated: “Concrete evidence” of the presence of the TTP in Afghanistan has been shared with the Taliban administration, but “no positive progress has been seen yet.”

The Taliban administration, rejecting this claim, has said:
“We have cases where Daesh outlaws have entered Afghanistan from Pakistani territory and have used Pakistani soil against our land, and [terrorist] incidents are orchestrated from that country. Pakistan must answer for this.”
