ISIS remains deadliest terror group in 2024, expanding operations worldwide
According to the Global Peace Index report, ISIS and its affiliated groups were the deadliest terrorist organization in 2024, taking responsibility for killing over 1,800 people across 22 countries. The report states that ISIS has expanded its operations into 30 countries.
However, the report notes that the number of deaths attributed to ISIS has decreased by 10% compared to 2023. In 2023, ISIS was responsible for 1,996 deaths, while the figure for the previous year was 1,805.
The Global Peace Institute report also reveals that in 2023, groups like ISIS, Pakistani Taliban, Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimeen, and Al-Shabaab were responsible for over 4,200 deaths. These groups operated in 29 countries, expanding to 30 in 2024.
The report mentions that in 2024, 36% of terrorist attacks worldwide had no group claiming responsibility. This highlights a growing trend of attacks where no group openly takes credit.
ISIS continues to maintain a global presence through its various branches. In 2024, it was active in 22 countries across the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Europe. Its Khorasan branch has become one of the most active jihadist groups globally.
ISIS Khorasan has extended its operational areas beyond Afghanistan to include Pakistan, Iran, Russia, and Central Asia. This expansion has raised international concerns and led to increased counterterrorism efforts in the European Union, Russia, and Central Asia.
In 2024, ISIS Khorasan was responsible for two of the deadliest terrorist attacks—one in Iran and another in Russia. The group has intensified its recruitment efforts, producing multilingual propaganda aimed at South and Central Asian citizens.
The Global Peace Index report for 2025 shows that Afghanistan, under Taliban control, ranks ninth for terrorism. Afghanistan witnessed an increase in terrorist attacks by nearly 20% compared to the previous year, with 87 incidents reported in 2024.
Despite a decrease in overall casualties in Afghanistan, terrorist activities remain high. The rise in attacks in northern provinces like Kabul and Takhar demonstrates the ongoing security challenges in the country. While there is a decline in casualties, Afghanistan continues to face persistent violence.
The global terrorism landscape has seen shifting trends, with a reduction in total deaths and attacks in some regions but an increase in individual terrorist acts, especially in Western countries. The report underscores the need for continued international efforts to combat terrorism and address its root causes.
