ISIS regrouping in eastern Syria and increasing attacks against the Syrian Army

The Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL/IS/Daesh) appears far from defeated following their recent attacks against the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in eastern Syria.

Over the last two weeks, the Islamic State has increased their attacks against the Syrian Arab Army, launching big assaults on the latter’s positions around the key city of Al-Mayadeen in the Deir Ezzor Governorate.

On Saturday, the Islamic State launched a big assault on the Syrian Arab Army’s positions in the Badiya area of Al-Mayadeen; this resulted in several casualties for the military.

According to a security source in Damascus, these latest Islamic State attacks in eastern Syria are not a coincidence. The source says the Islamic State is regrouping and preparing to launch a major assault that might see them retake land in vast desert region of Syria.

He would add that the Syrian Arab Army is aware of the Islamic State’s activity, but the biggest problem has to do with the terrain, which is favorable to the terrorist group because it allows them to disappear in the caves and mountains of the Homs and Deir Ezzor governorates.

Furthermore, it is not just the Syrian Army that is being targeted by the Islamic State. The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have also been targeted the Islamic State sleeper cells, especially in the Al-Hasakah Governorate.

The SDF have been conducting combing operations against the Islamic State in the governorates of Al-Raqqa, Al-Hasakah, and Deir Ezzor; however, it appears that the terrorist group still maintains several sleeper cells across the eastern Euphrates.
