ISIS persists in resurgence efforts in Syria, Iraq
The Islamic State (ISIS) released the weekly toll of its attacks across Syria, Iraq, Africa and Asia in a report published yesterday.
According to the report, ISIS militants carried out assaults on the Iraqi Army in Kirkuk and in the south of Iraq, resulting in three casualties last week.
The report says that ISIS perpetrated numerous acts of violence in the week. The group claimed responsibility for the killing of one individual and the destruction of three military barracks in a central African province, as well as the death and injury of three individuals in a further attack.
A single operation orchestrated by the organisation resulted in six fatalities and injuries in Mozambique, according to the same report.
Despite ongoing efforts to eradicate ISIS, there has been a recent notable surge in the group’s activities and the threats it is making, while Turkey’s ongoing targeting of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) only serves to hinder the SDF’s counter-ISIS operations.
Following the collapse of the ISIS caliphate, remaining members of the organisation have established sleeper cells in former strongholds like Raqqa and Palmyra in Syria, as well as smaller urban centres including al-Bab. While between 2014 and 2019, the group was fixated on establishing a state, its current objective is mere survival. One of its regular activities is to target prisons in Kurdish-led northern Syria with the aim of liberating seasoned combatants.
