ISIS member arrested inside hotel in Baghdad
The Iraqi authorities announced on Sunday that a member belonging to the ISIS terrorist group had been arrested in a hotel in Baghdad, clarifying that he was on a mission to collect information about security men.
The man was arrested in a hotel in the Al-Rusafa district on the eastern side of the River Tigris in Baghdad, according to a statement issued by the Federal Intelligence and Investigation Agency (FIIA) of the Ministry of Interior.
The statement illustrated that the person was arrested after receiving accurate information about the existence of a wanted fugitive in connection with terrorist activities, including providing ISIS terrorists with information about security men.
Following an interrogation, the Iraqi security discovered that the man, who admitted that he belongs to ISIS, was assigned to gather personal information about security men in Nineveh governorate.
The statement did not reveal the identity of the person or the name of the hotel where he was arrested.
Although the Iraqi authorities declared their victory over the extremist organization at the end of 2017, extremists continue to attack army and police personnel sporadically, particularly in rural and remote areas outside major cities.
A report issued by the United Nations last July mentioned that counter-terrorism operations conducted by Iraqi forces continued to curtail the activities of ISIS, which nevertheless maintained its insurgency at a very low level.
The report added that ISIS operations were limited to rural areas, while attacks in urban centers almost stopped.
