ISIS affiliate may plot terrorist attack in Belgium
An alleged Daesh affiliate might be planning a terrorist attack in Belgium, local Het Laatste Nieuws news outlet reported Saturday.
The French citizen, who is currently in Iraq, is suspected by the Belgian authorities of recruiting, training and encouraging so-called lone wolves, according to the Het Laatste Nieuws news outlet. The information obtained by the broadcaster shows that there were “seven terrorists just waiting for a sign” from the suspect.
According to the newspaper, one of the suspected terror attack plotters might be a Belgian national, who traveled to Syria in 2014. The man reportedly had ties to Abdelhamid Abaaoud, a Belgian terrorist of Moroccan origin, whom Belgian authorities suspected of having planned and led the Daesh-plotted November 13, 2015 attacks that killed at least 130 people in central Paris, and who was later killed by French police.
The suspected terrorist’s social networks have been silent for weeks, which the authorities preliminarily interpret either as his death or him being busy by preparing an attack.
Both Belgian and French authorities are said to be considering this threat seriously, but claim there is no terrorist threat at the moment.
