ISIS activities increase in the Kurdish town of Khanaqin
A Peshmerga commander has warned about the increased activities of the Islamic State (IS) in the disputed Kurdish town of Khanaqin as the jihadist group has conducted several attacks in the area recently.
“The security gap in Khanaqin and its surrounding villages has led to the evacuation of 20 Kurdish villages,” Jamhur Rostam told Kurdistan 24.
He added that this indicates the resurgence of the extremist group in the country and that the Iraqi security forces are not able to ensure the security of the region.
The Islamic State was declared defeated in late 2017, but the group’s sleeper cells still continue to target the security forces and civilians in the country.
