Iraqi soldier killed in Islamic State attack near Khanaqin
Islamic State (IS) militants attacked a unit from the Iraqi army near Khanaqin in Diyala province, and killed at least one soldier.
The jihadists attacked the Iraqi forces first before midnight on Wednesday in the vicinity of Shafiq village, where heavy fire exchange broke out afterwards, said Mahmoud Dalo, a local representative for the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).
They killed an Iraqi soldier and escaped the scene.
Later in the early hours of Thursday, the official said, the jihadists once again attacked the Iraqi forces, but they were repelled with no casualties.
As the Iraqi army is leading a massive operation against the IS remnants in northwest of the country, jihadists are regrouping and carrying out regular attacks on civilians and armed forces elsewhere in the country.
