Iraqi counter terror forces arrested thirteen suspected Islamic State terrorist group members
Iraqi Special Operations Forces (ISOF) announced on Wednesday (December 8) the arrest of 13 suspected Islamic State (ISIS) members in a string of operations throughout the country.
ISOF said four of the arrested men were leaders in the terrorist organization. Three of the suspected ISIS leaders were arrested in Baghdad in Counter Terrorism Service’s first operation. ISOF said one of the suspects had “taken part in cowardly and treacherous operations targeting officers in the security forces.”
In another operation, ISOF said a military leader was arrested along with his companion in the outskirts of Kirkuk.
Counter Terrorism Service said four militants were arrested in Anbar, and in a fourth operation, four were arrested in Diyala, Salahadin and Ninawa.
Iraqi forces regained territorial control of Iraq from ISIS in 2017 but sleeper cells have remained. The security situation has been especially vulnerable in areas of the country between the control of the Iraqi army and Peshmerga forces.
