Iraqi army troops arrested senior Islamic State terrorists in Mosul and Salahuddin
Iraqi security forces detained two senior members of the Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) terror group in Zummar district, located 60 kilometers northwest of Mosul.
“Based on intelligence, the Police Directorate in Zummar arrested two Daesh terrorists northwest of Mosul,” according to a statement released by Iraq’s Interior Ministry on Saturday.
In a separate development, an intelligence official revealed on Saturday that six Daesh terrorists were also arrested in Iraq’s holy city of Samarra in the north-central province of Salahuddin following a complicated operation.
In recent months, suspected Daesh militants have stepped up attacks, particularly in the area between Kirkuk, Salahuddin (north), and Diyala (east), known as the “Triangle of Death”.
In 2017, Iraq declared victory over Daesh by reclaiming all of its territory – about a third of the country’s area – invaded by the terrorist group in 2014.
However, the terrorist group still maintains sleeper cells in some areas of Iraq and periodically launches attacks.
The Iraqi army and popular forces continue to carry out frequent operations against the terror group in these parts of the country.
