Iraqi airstrikes reveal Lebanon’s worsening Islamic State problem

While the number of Lebanese joining the Islamic State group (IS) is not large, they are increasingly active and have been implicated in attacks abroad.

Late last month, IS targeted a military barracks some 50 km (31 miles) northeast of Baghdad, killing a guard and 11 soldiers as they slept.

The Lebanese connection was apparent in the aftermath of retaliatory airstrikes north of the Iraqi capital which killed nine IS members.

Among the dead were four natives of the northern Lebanese town of Tripoli. Some reports allege that up to five Lebanese nationals were killed in the aerial bombings.
