Iraq’s Digital Media Center confirms Islamic State activity on Facebook and Instagram
Iraq’s Digital Media Center (DMC) said on Wednesday (December 29) social media accounts belonging to Islamic State (ISIS) members have popped up on Facebook and Instagram recently, making themselves known after photos were spread that showed the decapitated body of a police officer murdered by ISIS.
DMC said in a statement on Wednesday many social media users were surprised to see comments posted that appeared to be from supporters of the terrorist group. The media center said it has confirmed “clear activity of various individual accounts belonging to ISIS supporters.”
The center stated some accounts were old and had recently been reactivated and others were hacked accounts “exploited for the benefit of ISIS.” The DMC statement went on to explain users were using loopholes to bypass algorithms and encrypting banned terms.
Some Instagram accounts are also using the Reels service, a video feature similar to TikTok, to publish ISIS-related content.
DMC said the center is calling on Facebook to “increase the human teams that monitor and follow these accounts.”
ISIS recently released photos purporting to show the decapitated body of Colonel Yasser al-Jourani, a police officer and director of the Adhamiya Passports Department, two weeks after Jourani was captured while hunting with friends in Diyala’s Hamrin region, the Associated Press said.
