Iran-backed militias claim responsibility for attack on US bases in Syria and Iraq

Iran-backed militias in Iraq have claimed responsibility for an attack on US forces at the al-Tanf military base in southern Syria.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq – which encompasses several local Iranian-backed militias – said it used two drones to attack the al-Tanf garrison near the border with Jordan and Iraq. The area is particularly sensitive as it is used as a route to transport weapons to Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. The attacks come after a string of other attacks in Iraq and Syria in the past week.

The group also claimed to have targeted two bases in Iraq with drones which caused minor injuries among US troops.

The US has about 900 troops stationed in Syria while 2,500 US personnel are stationed in Iraq.

Iran also funds Hamas – Israel says it has “evidence” Tehran was involved in the October 7 attack – as well as Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.

Hezbollah and Israel have engaged in regular, and sometimes deadly, clashes since Hamas stormed over the Gaza border and massacred at least 1,400 Israelis.

In addition, the Iranian-backed Houthis in Yemen fired missiles last week which were intercepted by a US Destroyer in the Red Sea. Iran also supports the al-Assad regime in Syria.
