Investigating other angles besides terror: IGP Kashmir

Jammu and Kashmir Police is investigating other angles into Sunday’s killing in Baramulla of a retired Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) besides terror.

“We are investigating other angles,” Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir, Virdi Kumar Birdi told Greater Kashmir. “A shotgun used for hunting has been used to carry out the attack.”

The Kashmir Police chief said, “Things have come out after postmortem. The bullets recovered are of shot and the timing of the incident (6:15 am) makes it suspicious. We are ascertaining if it is a case of rivalry.”

He said that the retired Police officer’s family was in mourning and the Police had not spoken to them about this yet.

“Things will be clear soon. The presence of terrorists in such an area is very rare,” Birdi said.

A shotgun is a type of long-barreled firearm that is designed to be fired from the shoulder, and it is often used to shoot a spread of projectiles called “shots”.

Shotguns are commonly used for hunting, sport shooting, and self-defence.

Soon after the incident, Police said that the retired SSP had been shot dead by terrorists in Baramulla.

“Terrorists fired at Muhammad Shafi, a retired Police officer, at Gantmulla, Sheeri Baramulla, while reciting Adhan in a mosque and succumbed to injuries,” the Kashmir Zone Police said in a post on X.
Police said that the area had been cordoned off after the incident and further details were awaited.
