One person dead and another injured in stabbing attack in Germany

One man is dead and another has been injured after a stabbing attack in Wuppertal-Elberfeld, a city in Germany’s west.

Police says they are searching for as many as three men who ran away after the stabbing at a shop in the central business district.

“We can confirm there has been a deadly crime. One man has died and another man is in hospital,” a police spokeswoman told AFP.

A 31-year-old man was killed and a 25-year-old was injured in the incident, which took place in the city 20km east of Dusseldorf about 12.45pm Greenwich meant time on Friday (10.45pm Australian eastern standard time).

Local broadcaster WDR reported that a verbal altercation has preceded the incident.

It is not clear whether the event was related to terrorism.

Journalist Dirk Lotze, who is at the scene, says according to witnesses the suspects are hiding in a building.

The news follows two apparent terrorism events in Finland and Spain.

Two people were killed and several people were injured in a stabbing in the city of Turku, Finland, on Friday afternoon, including a woman pushing a baby in a pram.

Meanwhile, at least 14 people were killed and more than 130 injured when suspected terrorists drove a van through a busy tourist strip in Barcelona, Spain, on Thursday.
