Indonesian national charged over having connection to the ISIS terrorist group

An Indonesian construction worker believed to have been involved in a plan to attack the Bukit Aman police headquarters was charged with allegedly supporting and possessing items related to the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group.

Mohd Al-Arshy Mus Budiono, 23, nodded his head after the charge was read out before Sessions Court judge Azura Alwi.

No plea was recorded.

Under the first charge, the accused allegedly gave support to the IS by possessing items belonging to the group in Kampung Pasir Petaling, Klang Lama, here at 3.30pm on Jan 17.

The charge under Section 130J(1)(a) of the Penal Code provides for a lifetime imprisonment or 30 years in jail or fine and forfeiture of items in the case.

The accused was also charged with having in his possession items with terrorism elements including two IS flags, a piece of A4 paper, a knife and its cover as well as a bracelet, all of which had the IS flag on them.

The offence was committed at the same place and time.

The charge under Section 130JB(1)(a) of the Penal Code carries a maximum seven years in jail or fine and forfeiture of the items.

The court fixed March 14 for mention.

Meanwhile, at a magistrate’s court, Mohd Al-Arshy was sentenced to four months’ jail and a whipping for entering the country without a valid permit.

Magistrate Mahyudin Mohmad Som passed the sentence after the accused pleaded guilty to the charge.

He committed the offence at a restaurant in Jalan Awan Hijau, Taman Overseas Union, here at 3pm on Jan 17.

The charge under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959 carries a maximum RM10,000 fine or maximum five years’ imprisonment or both and a maximum six strokes of the cane.

Deputy public prosecutor Munirah Shamsudin @ Baharum prosecuted while the accused was unrepresented.

Mohd Al-Arshy was arrested by the Bukit Aman Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division at a restaurant in Jalan Klang Lama on Jan 17.
