Somalia-based terror group, al-Shabaab has today, May 18, suffered a massive blow after spy agents impounded their weapon consignment.
It has been reported that a ship ferrying weapons belonging to the terror group was impounded in the Indian Ocean by spy agents from the National Intelligence and Security Agency of Somalia (NISA)
According to media reports from Somalia, NISA agents seized military equipment that al-Shabaab had imported.
State Minister for Internal Security Mohamed Haga told the state media that several people have been arrested, the businessmen who facilitated the importation of the weapons.
The consignment was seized after the ship arrived at the port of Somalia along the Indian Ocean
“The State Minister for Internal Security Mohamed Haga told State Media that #NISA officers at #Mogadishu Seaport seized military equipment belonging #Alshabab terrorists and apprehended people involved in facilitating the shipment businessmen.#Somalia,” read an update from the state media.
The seizing of al-Shabaab’s equipment is a huge blow to the terror group which has been on the receiving end since the military launched offensive operations a few months ago.
More than 3000 militants have been killed since the Somali National Army launched its offensive operations against al-Shabaab mid-last year.
Close to 4000 other militants were left with injuries after the military took operations to their hideouts and strongholds and several weapons were seized and destroyed.
Several areas and towns that were controlled by al-Shabaab were recaptured and are now under the control of government forces, leaving the terror group with reduced financial sources. It should be noted that collecting taxes from their strongholds is the group’s major source of finance
The federal government of Somalia declared that the war against the terror group will only stop after Shabaab is defeated.
Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has also been playing a crucial role in the offensive operations.
