IED planted by Islamic State terrorists killed two pro-Assad militants in the Syria desert

At least two Al-Quds Brigade militants were killed in suspected ISIS attacks during the past 24 hours near the historic city of Palmyra in the central Homs province.

Zaman al-Wasl quoted a military source as saying that two members were killed and eight more wounded at dawn on Tuesday in the Arak desert area when their vehicle was rocked with an explosive device.

The IED was planted in the car they were traveling in, explaining that it exploded near one of the military checkpoints of the same militia, where they were transferred to Palmyra Military Hospital.

Zaman Al-Wasl correspondent confirmed that the militia members mobilized in large numbers in the area, in addition to completely closing the roads leading to the al-Arak area.

The Russia-backed Palestinian militia played key role in backing the Syrian regime army in the Syrian desert but over the past few months has become an easy prey for ISIS jihadists who still control swathes in the Badia desert.

ISIL, which declared a caliphate straddling parts of Syria and Iraq in 2014, has lost all the territory that was under its control in 2019.

However, the group continues to wage a low-level fight in both countries, launching frequent hit-and-run raids from desert hideouts on either side of the border with Iraq.

Also, unknown assailants launched another attack on two military vehicles with a guided missile in the al-Arak area on Monday, killing four army troops.

The military reinforcements belonging to the militia and the Fourth Division arrived at the scene and transported the dead and wounded in military vehicles belonging to the Fourth Division to Palmyra Military Hospital.

The militia and the Fourth Division launched a joint military campaign in the area that continued until the evening, amid continuous flight of reconnaissance drones.

Syria’s conflict began in March 2011 and has killed nearly half a million people and displaced half the country’s pre-war population of 23 million.
