Hezbollah’s Tyre by-election candidate will become an MP by default in Lebanon
Hezbollah Thursday named senior party official Hasan Ezzeddine as its candidate in the Tyre by-election for the parliamentary seat left vacant by the resignation of former MP Nawwaf Musawi.
Ezzeddine was previously in charge of Hezbollah’s relations with Arab countries, though it is unclear if he currently maintains that position. A Hezbollah spokesperson could not immediately be reached for further information. Hezbollah is widely expected to win the upcoming by-election, set for Sept. 15, in an area where the group enjoys massive support.
A joint Hezbollah-Amal Movement electoral list received more than 90 percent of the vote share in the district in last year’s parliamentary elections – 134,068 votes out of the total 147,302 votes cast, according to Interior Ministry figures. Candidates have until 12 a.m. on Aug. 30 to submit their paperwork, and can withdraw before Sept. 4.
