Hezbollah claims it launched ‘intense rocket barrages’ at Israeli army in Golan Heights
Iran-backed Hezbollah on Tuesday (August 20) said it launched “intense rocket barrages” at Israeli army positions in the occupied Golan Heights.
Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) in a statement said, “Following the sirens that sounded a short while ago in the areas of the Upper Galilee and the Golan Heights, approximately 55 projectiles were identified crossing from Lebanese territory. Some of the projectiles were intercepted, and the rest fell in open areas. No injuries were reported.”
The Israeli military further claimed that shortly after the launches, the Israeli Air Force (IAF) struck one of the launchers from which the projectiles were fired.
“Israel Fire and Rescue Services are currently operating to extinguish fires that broke out in several areas in northern Israel due to falling projectiles.”
Hezbollah said that the attack was “in response” to Israeli strikes on east Lebanon the previous day. On Monday (August 19), Israel allegedly carried out strikes on the Bekaa Valley. A source told AFP that the Israeli attack had targeted weapons depots in the eastern region.
Israel’s military had said that fighter jets on Monday “struck a number of Hezbollah weapons storage facilities in the area of Bekaa in Lebanon,” triggering secondary blasts that indicated “large amounts of weapons” had been hit.
Lebanon’s health ministry said the strikes in east Lebanon injured eight people, including two children.
Along the Israel-Lebanon border, Israeli forces and Hamas’ ally Hezbollah have traded near-daily fire throughout the war.
