Fierce fighting erupts between Islamic State terrorists and Shi’ite militias near Khanaqin
The Islamic State (IS) militants attacked the Iraqi Shi’ite militias of Hashd al-Shaabi once again overnight on Sunday near Khanaqin district of Diyala province, which led to a fierce confrontation.
According to the information obtained by BasNews, the clash broke out in Mohammad Shir Bag village on the outskirt of Khanaqin.
Hashd al-Shaabi brigade in the town said in a statement that IS jihadists had attempted to sneak into Khanaqin before their plot was foiled.
The Iraqi government has declared IS defeated since late 2017. However, the group has managed to keep a foothold in the remote areas and carry out regular attacks.
The IS militants opened fire at a group of people watching a football game at a local stadium in Daquq, south of Kirkuk, last week, killing and injuring several people, including children.
