ISIS explosives buried under rubble cause serious challenge to the liberated Iraqi cities
The huge amount of explosive remnants across the war-affected areas of Iraq is posing obstacles to the process of reconstruction in the country and it prevents the aid agencies from delivering assistance to the returning families, said a senior manager with the UN Mine Action Service (UNMAS).
He told UN News that its teams are working with partners in the “most complex and challenging environment imaginable”, to survey and clear these threats.
As they were coming under attack from the Kurdish, Iraqi and Coalition forces, the IS militants rigged thousands of civilian houses and public places to hinder government forces’ advances.
The explosives are now buried under tons of rubble, creating a new challenge to the Iraqi government and NGOs in clearing the cities.
