Islamic State group attacks Egyptian Army forces leaving six soldiers dead
Twenty-four Islamic State group members and six Egyptian military members were killed.
Nearly 100 members of the Islamic State group have attacked Egyptian army officers at a security checkpoint in the North Sinai governorate, Reuters reported.
Twenty four from the Islamic State group and six Egyptian military members were killed in the standoff. About 20 Egyptian security forces were also injured.
Egyptian Army spokesperson Tamer El-Refaei said that the Islamic State group used two 4×4 vehicles to enter the area and detonate car bombs, rocket propelled grenades and “light weapons” to carry out the attack against Egypt’s military outpost.
The Islamic State group also claimed responsibility for an attack on the Al-Arish military post in North Sinai that killed six Egyptian soldiers. Egyptian military officials say Islamic State group fighters were also killed and injured in the clash.
Egypt has been fighting off Islamic State group members in the Sinai Peninsula since 2013, after the Egyptian military overthrew former President Mohamed Morsi. Hundreds of soldiers and civilians have died since that time.
The Islamic State group recently began attacking more urban, populated areas in Egypt, including Cairo churches.
