East London man, 22, arrested ‘on suspicion of encouraging terrorism’ as house is searched
Police have arrested a young man in East London on suspicion of encouraging terrorism. He was put into custody as officers conducted a search at an address in the area.
Officers detained the man yesterday evening (Tuesday, September 13) and took him to a police station in the south of the capital.
A spokesperson for the Met said: “Detectives from the Met Police Counter Terrorism Command have arrested a 22-year-old man on suspicion of encouraging terrorism, contrary to section 1 of the Terrorism Act 2006.
“They made the arrest under the Police and Crime Evidence Act today at approximately 6.20pm in East London. The man is now in custody at an south-London police station.
“Officers are currently searching an address in East London.”
This comes after the terror suspect Daniel Khalife was arrested in Northolt after allegedly escaping from HMP Wandsworth in South London last week.
He was in prison awaiting trial on charges of allegedly obtaining information useful to the enemy, eliciting information about members of the armed forces contrary to the Terrorism Act 2000, and perpetrating a bomb hoax.
It is understood that Mr Khalife’s trial on those charges had been due to start on November 13.
