Dozens of prisoners flee as the death toll of the Ghuwayran prison attack rises to more than 40 people
Reliable sources have informed SOHR that casualties of the violent clashes, that have been taking place since Thursday night, in Ghouran prison and its nearby areas in Al-Hasakah city rises to 41 persons, including 20 members of the Internal Security Forces (Al-Asayish), anti-terrorism forces and guards of the prison, 16 ISIS members and five civilians.
The number of deaths is expected to rise because many people have sustained injuries and there is information about more dead people.
In the same context, SOHR sources confirmed that dozens of ISIS members have escaped the Ghuwayran prison and deployed in its surroundings and nearby districts after ISIS prisoners have controlled the prison and seized its weapons and ammunition while clashes violently continue between the two sides.
It is worth noting that Ghuwayran prison houses nearly 3,500 ISIS leading figures and members and is the world’s largest prison of ISIS fighters.
It is worth noting that this is the most violent and largest attack of its kind since ending the control of ISIS on inhabited areas in the region in March 2019.
