SDF dismantles ISIS cell in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor
Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced on Sunday an Islamic State Organization (ISIS) sleeper cell was dismantled in a security operation in a town east of Deir ez-Zor Governorate, eastern Syria.
The operation was carried out on October 27, resulting in the killing of two militants and the arresting of two others.
The SDF and the US-led Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS recently have intensified security operations against the organization’s sleeper cells, owing to an increase in its activities in the region.
The SDF Media center said, “Counter-terrorism Units dismantled an ISIS terrorist cell in the al-Loizyia village, Deir Ezzor eastern countryside.”
The center added that the cell was “planning to target civilians and terrify the people of the region.”
The forces surrounded the whereabouts of the cell after refusing calls to surrender, resulting in clashes between the two parties, according to the center.
“Two terrorists were killed and two others were arrested,” in the operation, it added.
Additionally, the SDF seized weapons, hand grenades and a quantity of foreign currency that were in the militants possession.
On September 23, the SDF Media Center said in a statement that their forces, supported by the US-led Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, managed to capture nine members of the terrorist group.
The statement said that the militants were arrested “in the villages of al-Kassar, al-Tigayhi, and al-Zir in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor.”
Although the SDF launches intensive security operations in the countryside of Deir ez-Zor, the region has recently witnessed an increase in killing incidents carried out against SDF members, employees of the Autonomous Administration, tribal figures and civil residents.
The SDF keeps pursuing ISIS sleeper cells in Deir ez-Zor eastern countryside with the aim to maintain security and stability of the region.
