Iraqi army forces discover and destroy four ISIS tunnels near Mosul
Iraqi security forces on Wednesday destroyed four tunnels near Mosul in northern Iraq previously used by the Islamic State (IS) insurgents.
Yahya Rasool, a spokesperson for Iraqi army’s Joint Operations Command, was quoted by Iraqi media as saying that the tunnels were discovered during a security operation to hunt the remaining IS insurgents in the area.
At least 10 mortar shells and nine explosive charges were also seized from the multiple locations.
Despite being declared as defeated, IS remains active in certain areas of Iraq through sleeper cells and insurgency groups.
The militants remain a serious threat to security forces and civilians who regularly come under hit-and-run attacks by the jihadists.
