Syrian Defence Forces thwarts multiple ISIS suicide attacks in Baghouz
The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) revealed on Wednesday that they had thwarted multiple attempts by the Islamic State (IS) suicide bombers to harm the SDF offensive lines in Baghouz, east of Syria.
“There were suicide vest attacks by a group of bombers who tried to blow themselves up amidst our forces,” Reuters quoted Mustafa Bali, a spokesman for the SDF media office.
“Our forces targeted and killed them before they reached our positions,” he added.
The Syrian Kurdish forces, backed by the US-led Coalition airpower, is conducting a heavy attack to liberate the last populated enclave from IS in Syria, near the Iraqi border strip.
According to Bali, hunting the IS suicide bombers took place in the early morning on Wednesday between 04:00 and 06:00 (local time) when fierce clashes occurred between SDF and the IS jihadists.
SDF artillery and Coalition warplanes heavily bombarded Baghouz overnight. According to media reports, the targets were set on IS weapons depots and their military positions.
The Syrian Kurdish forces said on Tuesday that the battle for IS’s last enclave was “as good as over”.
