Deadly Ambush in Mali: 50 Wagner Mercenaries and 10 Malian Soldiers Killed

An al Qaeda affiliate has claimed responsibility for killing 50 Russian Wagner mercenaries and 10 Malian soldiers in a targeted ambush in northern Mali’s Kidal region, near the Algerian border, on Saturday, according to the SITE Intelligence Group.

The attack coincides with a Tuareg rebel movement named the Permanent Strategic Framework for Peace, Security and Development (CSP-PSD) boasting of inflicting casualties on Malian troops and Wagner mercenaries after days of combat in the border town of Tinzaouaten. This marks Wagner’s most significant defeat since aiding Mali’s junta in their fight against Islamist insurgencies.

Malian authorities, who underwent coups in 2020 and 2021, continue to assert that the Russian forces present are Russian trainers, not Wagner mercenaries, assisting local troops with Russian equipment. However, a rare statement from Wagner acknowledged that their fighters sustained severe casualties, including the death of their commander Sergei Shevchenko.

The ambush and subsequent clashes are part of Mali’s efforts, initiated on July 19, to stabilize the region. Meanwhile, the complexity of alliances, involving Tuareg separatists and jihadist groups like Jama’a Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Muslimin (JNIM), complicates the conflict dynamic.
