Darren Anthony Byrnes, along with Ahmad Mustakim bin Abdul Hamid, was accused of using the internet to encourage other foreigners to join al-Shabaab terrorist group.

The prosecution alleged that they had tried to recruit cells to carry out an attack in Paris, France, but gave no further details on when or how.

Byrnes had converted to Islam in 2006. He then travelled to Mombasa, on Kenya’s coast, where he married a Somali woman. He came to Somalia “to shed blood”. He crossed into Somalia in 2010, acc ording to the prosecution.

Byrnes told the court in the capital, Mogadishu, that when he entered the country he came across some Kenyan soldiers (they took $50 (£36) from him), who were part of an African Union force supporting the government.

The soldiers then asked him where is he going, and he said that he is going to Mogadishu to visit my family.

It is expected these two entities to be sentenced to 15 years by a military court in Somalia for belonging to Islamist militant group al-Shabaab.
