Court sentences 5 for promoting Islamic State ideology
Five people, including two women, were sentenced by a special NIA court in connection with a case related to a conspiracy by the banned Islamic State-Khorasan Province (ISKP) group to propagate ISIS ideology and sow terror through violent acts in India.
The court has sentenced one of the accused, Jahanzaib Sami, to prison terms ranging from three to 20 years, along with fines, for offences under various sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Sami was accused of plotting to establish a Caliphate in India and conspiring to carry out 100 IED blasts across the country in a single day.
NIA investigations revealed that Sami was also involved in raising, receiving, and providing funds through cryptocurrency to promote ISIS ideology, while also exploiting the sentiments of susceptible youth to fuel anti-CAA/NRC protests.
Hina Bashir Beigh, the second accused, received a seven-year jail term for each of two offences under two sections of the UAPA.Â
Beigh is said to be an ISIS member and had aided her husband in identifying like-minded individuals to advance the terrorist organisation’s agenda against India.
Another accused, Abdullah Basith, received a sentence equivalent to the time he had already served. He professed to be an ISIS member and assisted Jahanzaib Sami in preparing the ISIS Magazine “Voice of Hind”.
Sadiya Anwar Shaikh was also convicted under various sections of UAPA and sentenced to seven years each for attempting to unite all terrorist groups under the ISIS banner and trying to procure a suicide jacket through Jahanzaib Sami.
Nabeel Siddick Khatri received prison terms of 15, eight, and eight years respectively. He provided funds to Jahanzaib Sami for weapons procurement and carried out preparatory blasts in collusion with him to further ISIS ideology. Failure to pay a fine of Rs. 2.5 lakh would result in an additional 2 years of imprisonment.
Delhi Police Special Cell arrested two suspects, Jahanzaib Sami Wani and his wife Hina Bashir Beigh, from Okhla Vihar, Jamia Nagar, over their links to ISKP, a faction of ISIS.Â
“The duo had intentions to engage in subversive/anti-national activities within India. NIA took over the case on March 20, 2020, and conducted further investigations,” NIA said in an official statement.Â
During the probe, NIA apprehended two more individuals, Sadiya Anwar Shaikh and Nabeel S Khatri, from Pune on July 12, 2020. Subsequent inquiries led to the arrest of Abdur Rahman, also known as Dr. Brave, in August 2020.
The trial against Abdur Rahman, a medical student from Bangalore, is ongoing. He was radicalised by the other accused and travelled to Syria in December 2013.Â
There, he participated in various terrorist activities of ISIS and learnt to develop medical applications for treating ISIS terrorists, as well as a Laser Guided Anti-Tank Missile application for ISIS.
