Convicted terrorist with links to Islamic State terrorst group sentenced to life by Cairo court
A criminal court in Cairo has sentenced Ahmed Galal El-Bakry, a defendant charged with having links to the Islamic State terrorist group, to life in prison.
Defendants in the case, which dates back to 2015, were charged with joining an illegal group, communicating with the Islamic State terrorist group and assaulting public and private properties.
In 2019, the Court of Cassation, whose rulings are final and unappealable, rejected an appeal by eight defendants in the case, upholding a 2016 life-imprisonment sentence against them.
The court in 2016 also handed life sentences against other three defendants in the case in absentia, including El-Bakry.
El-Bakry, who was arrested later, was retried in the case per the Egyptian penal code.
The fresh ruling against El-Bakry can still be appealed. A life sentence in Egypt is 25 years in prison.
