Russian citizen sentenced to 5 years in prison for attempt to join ISIS terrorist group
The North Caucasus District Military Court has sentenced a 29-year old man to 5 years in prison for preparing to join the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist organization prohibited in Russia, the Krasnodar Territory’s prosecutor’s office reports on its website.
The court found that in February 2017, a resident of the Krasnodar Territory embracing extremist ideas attempted to enter Turkey through Georgia for joining ISIS and participation in terrorist activities in Syria. His criminal intent was stopped by law enforcement officers in Russia.
The Islamic State, an organization which is prohibited in Russia, is currently one of the major threats to global security. Over three years, these terrorists have managed to seize large areas of Iraq and Syria. Currently, various forces combat the organization in both countries with battle for Iraqi Mosul as one of the most crucial directions.
