Chadian army killed more than 300 terrorists
More than 300 terrorists were killed and 150 others, including three top leaders, taken prisoner on Saturday in Chad’s western Kanem province, a Chadian army spokesperson said on Monday.
“We also deplore five martyrs and 36 wounded,” said Azem Bermandoa Agouna, spokesman for the general staff, referring to Chadian army personnel killed and injured in the fighting.
He said the army also seized 26 vehicles from the enemy, 16 of which were equipped with heavy weapons.
Since April 11, the day of the presidential poll in Chad, militants of the Front for Alternation and Concord in Chad (FACT), an armed rebel group based in neighboring Libya, have made incursions into the province of Tibesti, in northern Chad.
On Saturday evening, Chadian government spokesperson Cherif Mahamat Zene said on social media that the recent “adventure of mercenaries from Libya has come to an end.”
In a statement released on Sunday, the FACT claimed that it has proceeded on Saturday with the “liberation” of Kanem.
Also on Sunday, several opposition parties and civil society organizations in Chad called on the warring parties to reach a ceasefire, and asked the government to open an inclusive national dialogue to ease tensions.
