Iraqi army forces capture two Islamic State terrorists in Diyala
Iraqi troops arrested on Wednesday two members of the terrorist Islamic State group in Diyala province, a security source was quoted as saying.
“A force from the paramilitary Popular Mobilization Forces arrested two of Islamic State militants, who were planning to flee into al-Adhim district in Diyala to carry out terrorist attacks there,” Iraqi website Almaalomah quoted the source as saying.
The source added that the pair were seized with communications devices in their possession.
Popular Mobilization Forces, an alliance of volunteer Shia paramilitary forces, have actively backed the Iraqi government’s military campaign against IS since 2014, when they were formed upon a top Shia clergy edict to counter the Sunni Jihadist group.
PMF won official recognition as a national force late 2016, becoming under the command of the prime minister, who is also the supreme commander of the armed forces.
Despite the terrorist group’s crushing defeat at its main havens across Iraq, Islamic State continues to launch sporadic attacks against troops with security reports warning that the militant group still poses a threat against stability in the country.
