Huge sum of ISIS cash buried under Mosul rubbles
A huge sum of the cash stolen by the Islamic State (IS) is now buried under the rubbles in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul which was liberated from the extremist group last year, a government source said.
“Some Daesh [IS] prisoners have admitted that the group’s treasury lays beneath the ruins of the Old Town in western Mosul,” Iraqi media cited an unnamed source from the government.
IS seized control of Mosul in June 2014 until it was defeated and ousted three years later in 2017 by the Iraqi army, Peshmerga forces and the US-led Coalition.
The group immediately after controlling Mosul stole millions of dollars from the city’s central bank.
