British soldiers seized Islamic State gun stash in Mali
British troops on the world’s most dangerous peacekeeping mission in Mali have seized a cache of weapons hidden by a suspected Islamic State cell that was threatening villagers.
About 100 soldiers from the Light Dragoons and 2nd Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment moved into a village during a sandstorm and seized AK-47s and ammunition hidden by jihadists.
The operation, the first of its kind by UN forces in the country, took place this month in a village close to the border with Niger after troops received intelligence about violent extremists operating in the area.
The Ministry of Defence said that the jihadists had been intimidating communities, extorting money and assaulting people who refused to comply with their demands.
