British Embassy in Madrid threatened with terrorist attack
The National Police have arrested a 51-year-old man for threatening to launch a terrorist attack on the British Embassy in Madrid, Spain.
As reported by the Chief of Police, the man made repeated phone calls to the consulate on January 11 where he said that he would attack the building within 72 hours as “had nothing to lose.”
Due to the serious threat, the police immediately launched an investigation in collaboration with security officials from the Embassy and were able to identify the caller.
It is understood that the man, who is of Lebanese nationality, has an extensive criminal record and that investigators considered him to be a dangerous individual capable of such an attack. It is also reported that throughout his criminal history, he had used 10 different identities.
Officers were able to locate the man at a property in Benalmádena where he appeared in court today (January 24). The judge has ordered him to keep 500 meters away from the British Embassy and its diplomats, and is prohibited to call them on the phone.
The man had carried out similar threats against the British Consulate in Costa del Sol’s Malaga in 2009 and would frequently post his hatred for Britain on social media.
