Boko Haram attacks military base in Borno, kill soldiers days after deradicalisation

Several soldiers have been killed following an attack by members of the Boko Haram on a military base in Borno State, few days after about 800 Boko Haram members surrendered to the military for deradicalisation.

The attacks occured on Tuesday, February 11 at an undisclosed military camp in Bornu State.

A viral video revealed some unnamed soldiers lamenting over the destruction caused by the insurgents as well as the death of their fellow soldiers.

Emeka Onumajuru, the Chief of Defence Training and Operations, had earlier announced that on Sunday, February 9, 129,000 Boko Haram fighters and their families surrendered so far, but only a select group had been chosen for rehabilitation.

He said, “To get the numbers right, right now, we have about 129,000 surrendered Boko Haram members and their families.”

Onumajuru clarified that all individuals who surrender will undergo legal assessment, with those found guilty facing prosecution, while those deemed suitable for rehabilitation will be enrolled in the deradicalisation program.

However, this attack is a major setback in the conquest of the Nigerian army against the insurgents.

The Nigerian Army have not yet made any official comment regarding attack.
