Australian terror suspect to be extradited to Queensland by the authorities
A Queensland man accused of fighting for a terrorist group will be extradited to Brisbane after he faced court in Adelaide.
Agim Ajazi came before Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday after he was deported by Turkish authorities this week.
He appeared by video-link from the Adelaide City Watch House, where he spoke in an Australian accent to say he could hear proceedings.
Ajazi made no application for bail, nor did he contest a commonwealth prosecutor’s request for his extradition to Queensland.
The application was approved by magistrate Simon Smart, while several Australian Federal Police officers were also in court for the hearing.
Ajazi is one of 21 alleged fighters captured in northern Syria and deported by Turkey in the past three weeks, Turkish authorities say.
Australian law says terrorism acts may be prosecuted here even if they occurred in a foreign country.
