At least 13 Iraqi soldiers are killed in the latest Islamic State ambush in Qara Tapa

At least 13 Iraqi soldiers were killed or wounded in an Islamic State (IS) ambush in disputed town of Qara Tapa on Monday afternoon, an official confirmed.

Speaking to BasNews, Mohammed Omer, a Patriotic Union of Kurdistan’s (PUK) representative to the area, pointed out that the incident occurred in Qara Tapa town of Diyala province, where four Iraqi soldiers were killed and nine others were injured.

He explained that after the Iraqi warplanes conducted airstrikes against the jihadists in the village of Khallawiya in Qara Tapa, the army was ordered to head to the area and “collect details on the outcome of the operation.”

“But before reaching the area, they were ambushed by the militants of Daesh organization and heavy clashes erupted between the two sides, which resulted in the killing of four Iraqi soldiers and nine others were injured,” Omer said.

He said that the pro-Iranian Hashd al-Shaabi militias were later deployed to the scene, with no further details available for now.
