Assad regime executed dozens of Hamas members without trial, report reveals
Dozens of leaders and members of Hamas were assassinated by the deposed regime of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad, Al-Quds Al-Arabi reported, citing sources close to the movement.
The sources told the London-based newspaper that 94 Hamas members were executed in Syrian prisons without trial.
They added that intelligence documents discovered in Syrian security agency offices after the overthrow of Bashar Al-Assad’s regime confirmed ongoing orders to arrest anyone connected to Hamas.
Despite a reconciliation between Hamas and the Assad regime two years ago, the regime continued to label Hamas as a “traitorous organisation.”
The sources also denied that any detainees had been released, including prominent Al-Qassam Brigades commander Mamoun Al-Jaloudi, known as Abu Judat.
According to the sources, Hamas had submitted a list of detainees to the former Secretary-General of Hezbollah, the late Hassan Nasrallah, after he promised to pursue the matter with senior officials within the regime.
However, the sources indicated that Nasrallah did not provide Hamas with any information.
It is believed he discovered that all the individuals listed had been executed, fearing this revelation might derail the reconciliation process, which, according to the sources, had never genuinely advanced. The Assad regime, they explained, only agreed to a superficial reconciliation under pressure from its allies, Iran and Hezbollah.
The sources further noted that all communication between the Assad regime and Hamas ceased in October 2023. Damascus did not issue any statements of condolence after Israel targeted and killed Hamas leaders, including Ismail Haniyeh, Yahya Sinwar and Saleh Al-Arouri.
